Arsenal can draw on spirit of 2006 to beat Bayern, insists Henry

Thierry Henry wants Arsenal to draw on their 2006 Champions League heroics to defy history and overcome Bayern Munich after the clubs were again drawn together in the competition on Monday.

Arsene Wenger s side will meet the Bundesliga champions over two legs for a spot in the quarter-finals, having been pitted together on Europe s biggest stage for the fourth time in five seasons.

Bayern knocked the Gunners out at the same stage in 2013 and 2014, while they met in the group phase of last season s competition.

But Henry – the club s all-time record goalscorer – believes Arsenal s run to the final a decade ago can provide inspiration for the current crop.

I remember when we drew Real Madrid the year we went to the final in 2006 with Arsenal, I…

Liverpool 4-0 Southampton: Jota at the double as rampant Reds sweep Saints aside

Diogo Jota scored twice in the first half as Liverpool romped to a comfortable 4-0 victory over Southampton at Anfield on Saturday.

The Portugal forward grabbed his first with less than two minutes played, turning Andy Robertson s low ball in before adding a second from close range after being set up by Mohamed Salah half an hour later.

Thiago Alcantara fired in a deflected third to give the Reds a commanding half-time lead before Virgil van Dijk steered a corner home to round off the scoring shortly after the restart.

The victory sees Liverpool keep the pressure up on league leaders Chelsea, moving to within a point of the Blues – although the Reds have played an extra game.

Liverpool got off to a flying start as Sadio Mane and Robertson combined on th…

Burnley manager Sean Dyche has insisted Andre Gray s apology was authentic after abusive and homophobic tweets posted by the striker were uncovered.

Behrami agrees Watford switch

Premier League new boys Watford have confirmed the acquisition of Hamburg midfielder Valon Behrami on a three-year contract.

The Switzerland international returns to the Premier League after six seasons away  having left West Ham in January 2011  and is the sixth new signing at Vicarage Road.

Behrami left Upton Park for Fiorentina and also played for Napoli before turning up at Hamburg in August 2014.

He became a regular last season as Hamburg battled for survival for a second successive campaign, making 22 appearances as they narrowly avoided relegation from the Bundesliga.

The 30-year-old watched from the sidelines on Saturday as his new club were held to a 2-2 draw in a friendly clash with AFC Wimbledon.

Brazil – Chile Preview: Winning is ‘our only option’ – Dunga

Brazil coach Dunga said winning is the only option for us ahead of Sunday s friendly against Chile at the Emirates Stadium.
The Brazilians are in terrific form under Dunga, who replaced Luiz Felipe Scolari after a disastrous end to the 2014 World Cup, which they hosted.
Dunga in his second spell as coach has seen his side win all seven matches they have played since the World Cup, conceding just two goals in the process.
The highlight of that run came on Thursday, when Brazil came from behind to defeat France 3-1 in front of more than 80,000 fans in Paris.
Raphael Varane gave France an early lead but Oscar levelled before Neymar and Luiz Gustavo struck in the second half to give the South Americans victory.
Barcelona star Neymar has eight goals in his last seven internationals an…

Gerard Deulofeu has finally sealed his protracted loan move to AC Milan from Everton.

The winger arrived in Milan on Sunday and has now officially completed a deal that will keep him at San Siro until the end of the season.

Deulofeu s switch was thrown into doubt by a bizarre sequence of events on Friday, when the Serie A side announced the deal had been done on Twitter but later removed the tweet as Everton denied an agreement had been reached.

Taylor in line for new Swansea City deal

Neil Taylor is set to be offered a new contract with Swansea City,.

The 26 year old, who missed the majority of last season through injury, has made thirty-four appearances in all competitions so far this season.

Prior to his move to the Liberty Stadium in 2010 the defender spent three years with Wrexham – the club where he began his career, and he now looks set to extend his stay in his home country despite being linked with a move to a number of the Swans’ Premier League rivals.

Over the past two transfer windows Crystal Palace, West Bromwich Albion and West Ham United have all eyed a move for Taylor, who has been capped twenty-one times for Wales while he was also part of Great Britain’s squad for the 2012 Olympic Games.

Vidal eyes new Bayern contract despite transfer talk

Arturo Vidal insists he is not thinking about leaving Bayern Munich and would be happy to extend his contract at the club.

The Chilean midfielder, who joined Bayern from Juventus in 2015, has seen his future come under scrutiny this season amid reported interest from Chelsea.

Bayern s deal to sign Leon Goretzka from Schalke at the end of the season has encouraged talk Vidal could be allowed to leave, with Inter also said to be monitoring his situation.

But the 30-year-old has no plans to leave the Allianz Arena and would consider an extension to his contract, which expires in 2019.

I don t think about a transfer, Vidal was quoted as saying by Sport1.  I feel very comfortable here.

Of course I would like to extend my contract. That s an option. …

Vardy´s goal decline and Mahrez´s assist struggles: The Opta stats behind Ranieri´s Leicester demise

Claudio Ranieri had the football romantics dreaming again when he led Leicester City to the Premier League title last season.

But sadly this term has been more of a horrible nightmare for the not-so-fantastic Foxes, who face a battle to stay in the top flight, leading to the popular Italian s shock dismissal on Thursday.

The loss of N Golo Kante, who has continued to show his unrivalled defensive-midfield qualities at runaway league leaders Chelsea, undoubtedly left a void.

But the likes of top scorer Jamie Vardy, PFA Player of the Year Riyad Mahrez – both of whom caught the attention of Europe s heavyweights – and Danny Drinkwater have also fallen well short of last season s remarkable achievements.

Southgate explains why Wan-Bissaka missed out on England squad

England boss Gareth Southgate says Aaron Wan-Bissaka is not in his squad as he remains a step behind his rivals for a right-back spot.

The Three Lions are blessed with options in the position and the latest squad includes Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kieran Trippier, Kyle Walker and Reece James, as well as Arsenal duo Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Bukayo Saka, who can play as wing-backs.

Wan-Bissaka has impressed defensively since joining Manchester United from Crystal Palace for a reported £50million last year. In 2019-20, he won 80 tackles in the Premier League, 11 more than any other defender, and was only dribbled past by an opponent on 22 occasions.

By contrast, Alexander-Arnold was beaten 42 times by an opponent dribbling past him last season, but the Liverpool m…
